about

A topical collection of character sketches and modern commentary, SIDE A captures Natchez Tracers in their rhythmic and melodic sweet-spot. The EP opens with the rollicking boogie-rock, post-apocalyptic love song “Ride It out with You.” This is followed by the lilting, sanguine “Luminosity” complete with world music influences and a message of hope for a tribally-fixated and increasingly disconnected humanity.

Arguably, the collection’s centerpiece is the Americana Gothic and haunting “Johnny Ray.” Derek Pell returns again as a guest Tracer to underpin the track with delicate and harrowing violin. The historical fiction lyrics were inspired by a true story and the music and imagery together provide a jilting glimpse into the chaotic world of schizophrenia.

The backend of the EP takes a decidedly more uplifting turn. “Get It On” lets loose a country funk swagger with some tongue-in-cheek innuendo while championing the workingman’s plight. Closing out the EP in grand fashion, is the sweeping “Started Feelin’ Better.” The horns and slide electric guitar provide a solid Muscle Shoals-feeling foundation to the song. The lyrics here are a clarion call to remain vigilant against the darker forces of deceit and manipulation that seem more and more prevalent in today’s modern culture. The song builds to a near gospel vamp, searing crescendo ending with the mantra and refrain to remind us “I never knew how bad I felt, ‘til I started feelin’ better.”
